31 Mississippi education centers recognized as Military Star Schools
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education has recognized 31 education centers as 2024-2026 Military Star Schools for their substantial support of military families and children of service members. These schools appoint military family liaisons, provide student-led support services, require staff training on military family needs, and publicly acknowledge the military community. The initiative was launched by Governor Tate Reeves in February 2022 and previously awarded the designation to 61 schools for 2023-2025. The program aims to ease educational and social-emotional challenges for military-connected children during transitions. Designations are valid for two years, with the opportunity for renewal or new applications in 2025.

Mississippi Supreme Court: Lawsuit against public dollars going to private schools ‘lacks standing’Â
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court, by a 7-2 majority, decided that Parents for Public Schools, Inc. (PPS) has no standing to challenge two bills that grant public funds to private schools. Represented by the ACLU, PPS argued that these bills violate the Mississippi Constitution, but the Court found no evidence that public education was adversely impacted. Despite an earlier ruling against private school funding by a Hinds County chancellor, the Court did not discuss the constitutionality of the funds' allocation. Senate Bills 2780 and 3064 involve appropriating $10 million of federal COVID-19 relief to private schools as grants.

Independent autopsy granted for body of Dau Mabil as questions in disappearance remain
SUMMARY: Following Dau Mabil's mysterious death, a Hinds County judge ruled on his body's handling amidst a lawsuit between his widow, Karissa Bowley, and brother, Bul Mabil. Judge Dewayne Thomas granted Bowley's request to replace Bul as the plaintiff, acknowledging her next of kin status despite their separation at Mabil's disappearance. Thomas also permitted an independent autopsy directed and funded by Bul, who doubts the investigation's thoroughness. Mabil's body is with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) pending their autopsy. Statewide attention has led Bowley to agree to publicly share the autopsy findings. Mabil, a Sudanese immigrant, vanished on March 25 and was found deceased in the Pearl River.
