Mississippi AG suing over Title IX change
SUMMARY: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch is suing the Biden administration over its plan to expand Title IX to cover LGBTQ+ students. Title IX was established in 1972 to protect women from discrimination, but the Biden administration announced that it will now also prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics in federally funded education programs. Fitch, along with other Republican attorneys general, filed a legal challenge to this ruling, claiming that Title IX has been crucial for girls for over fifty years and the Biden administration's actions will undo important progress.

Time running short for Mississippi Medicaid expansion deal
SUMMARY: The 2024 legislative session is coming to a close, with state lawmakers focusing on negotiations around Medicaid expansion. The main sticking point is the work requirement, with the House proposing an 80-hour monthly requirement while the Senate wants 120 hours. The House compromise covers up to 138% of the federal poverty level and includes language mandating a reapplication for work requirements once approved by the federal government. The Senate has not included this language, leading to ongoing debates between House and Senate negotiators. The session is set to end with an 8:00 PM deadline for filing conference reports.
