SUMMARY: In 2012, Meridian initiated a green on Fifth Street to improve drainage and roadways, adding trees for beautification. Concerns about tree roots damaging sidewalks were addressed with a unique underground drainage system that provides water to the trees while preventing disruption to the pavement. This innovative system is the first of its kind in Mississippi. The hopes that this project will attract more businesses to relocate to Meridian, bringing new to the area. The success of this project may to similar initiatives being implemented throughout the city and in the future.
