Mississippi Supreme Court declines to rehear Willie Cory Godbolt appeal
SUMMARY: On May 23, 2024, the Mississippi Supreme Court declined to rehear the appeal of Willie Cory Godbolt, convicted for the 2017 killings of eight people. In 2020, Godbolt was found guilty on all 12 counts, including murder and capital murder, and received life sentences for murder convictions and death sentences for capital murder convictions. The court affirmed his convictions and sentences in March 2024. Godbolt's public defenders argued in November 2023 for overturning the conviction due to improper bad act evidence, but state prosecutors highlighted the evidence of his violent history. The state maintained that his prior acts indicated motive and premeditation.
