Mississippi among 15 states rejecting new summer food aid for children
SUMMARY: The USDA announced that nearly 21 million children will receive expanded grocery benefits this summer in all but 15 states. This is the first launch of the new permanent grocery program called Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer. Eligible families will receive $40 per month for each child, with 70% of eligible children covered in the program's inaugural launch. Many Republican state officials in the 15 states that did not opt into the program stated that they did not need the funds or had existing programs in place. They also expressed concerns about the long-term impact and nutritional promotion of the new program.
