Jackson leaders want to demolish vacant buildings
SUMMARY: Residents and businesses in Jackson, Mississippi, are concerned about squatters, safety, and property values due to abandoned buildings. Councilman Vernon Hartley highlighted the issue, pointing out that only a small fraction of properties deemed health hazards are being cleaned up. Councilman Ashby Foote emphasized that abandoned properties generate fear among residents and lower property values. Both leaders agree that the city lacks sufficient funding for demolition and cleanup projects. They are exploring funding methods to improve the quality of life, increase property values, and strengthen neighborhoods. In May 2024, only two out of 42 hazardous properties were addressed.
