How to comply with Mississippi’s burn ban guidelines
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Forestry Commission has been dealing with a high number of wildfires since August 1st, with over 431 fires reported. The dry grass and trees have made it easy for even the smallest sparks to turn into forest fires, resulting in over 6,000 acres being burned in the last three weeks. Despite recent rain, much of the state is still at risk for wildfires. Governor Tate Reeves has issued a burn ban in forty counties, including the entire Pine Belt and most of central Mississippi, and violators could face fines. The commission urges caution and advises against any outdoor burning at this time.

Freedom Trail Marker
SUMMARY: The public enjoyed activities like line dancing, family karaoke, games, and food trucks at an event commemorating three civil rights activists killed decades ago. The Mississippi Humanities Council unveiled a Freedom Trail marker honoring Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney. These men, killed in 1964 after being released from Neshoba County Jail on suspicion of arson, were found shot near a church where they held meetings. The marker sits across from the old Neshoba County Jail and courthouse where Edgar Ray Killen was convicted. Their sacrifices significantly impacted Mississippi and America, reflecting the state's strong civil rights history.
