Hattiesburg aims to crackdown on school zone speeders
SUMMARY: Mayor Toby Barker is proposing a pilot program to place cameras at two local schools to enforce speed limits in school zones. The schools included in the proposal are Woodley and Grace Christian Elementary. If passed, officers will test the cameras' ability to catch speeding drivers beginning late April or early May. Crossing guard Jodie Hines and business owner Mickey Nichols both express concerns about speeding near the schools. Violators driving 10 miles over the speed limit in an active school zone will receive a ticket in the mail. Mayor Barker hopes the cameras will encourage drivers to slow down and pay attention in school zones.

Shafer Center offering 'Green Dot' training
SUMMARY: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Schaefer Center for Crisis Intervention in Pine Belt is working to break the stigma by encouraging everyone to get involved. They provide counseling and resources for victims of sexual assault, emphasizing the importance of being an active bystander to prevent or stop sex-related crimes. Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted, with one out of every six women and about 3% of men being victims. The Green Dot training empowers the community to intervene by being direct, delegating, or distracting in situations of potential harm. Taking action can make a difference in reducing the number of victims.
