Governor signs bill regulating water billing throughout the state

Governor Tate Reeves has signed a bill into law guaranteeing water billing rates throughout the state will be applied solely on the basis of consumption.

House Bill 698, authored by Rep. Shonda Yates, I-Jackson, prohibits municipalities from charging residents for water based off of the property value of one's home, also known as equity billing. Instead, citizens will be charged based on the amount of water consumed, or used, in the home.

SUMMARY: A woman died in a house fire in Madison County, Mississippi. The fire was responded to by the Gluckstadt Fire Department and the Farmhaven Volunteer Fire Department. It occurred at a mobile home on Barnes Road, resulting in the death of 53-year-old Wendy Parker. The Madison County Coroner, EOC, Sheriff's Office, and State Fire Marshal's Office also responded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Additionally, a man was arrested in Rankin County for trafficking 22 pounds of fentanyl.

Man arrested in Rankin County for trafficking 22 pounds of fentanyl

SUMMARY: A man was arrested in Rankin County, Mississippi after deputies discovered 22 pounds of fentanyl during a traffic stop on Interstate 20. The driver, Arturo Gonsen-Miranda, was charged with aggravated trafficking of a controlled substance. The arrest was made after the deputies developed probable cause that the driver may be involved in drug trafficking. A K-9 partner named “Voodoo” alerted on the vehicle, leading to the discovery of two false compartments where the fentanyl was found. Gonsen-Miranda was taken to the Rankin County Jail, and no bond has been set for him at this time.

JPS announces RFP for surplus school sites
