Eller, Smith advance to primary runoff in Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District
SUMMARY: Ron Eller and Andrew Scott Smith are in a runoff for the Republican nomination in Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District. The winner will face Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson in the general election. Mike Ezell won the Republican nomination in the state's 4th Congressional District. Eller is a military veteran supporting a border wall and domestic energy production, while Smith wants to focus on agriculture, infrastructure, border security, and government transparency. The eliminated candidate, Taylor Turcotte, worked in advertising. The 2nd District includes Jackson and rural areas. Thompson has been in office since 1993 and serves on the House Homeland Security Committee.

SUMMARY: A woman died in a house fire in Madison County, Mississippi. The fire was responded to by the Gluckstadt Fire Department and the Farmhaven Volunteer Fire Department. It occurred at a mobile home on Barnes Road, resulting in the death of 53-year-old Wendy Parker. The Madison County Coroner, EOC, Sheriff's Office, and State Fire Marshal's Office also responded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Additionally, a man was arrested in Rankin County for trafficking 22 pounds of fentanyl.

SUMMARY: A man was arrested in Rankin County, Mississippi after deputies discovered 22 pounds of fentanyl during a traffic stop on Interstate 20. The driver, Arturo Gonsen-Miranda, was charged with aggravated trafficking of a controlled substance. The arrest was made after the deputies developed probable cause that the driver may be involved in drug trafficking. A K-9 partner named “Voodoo” alerted on the vehicle, leading to the discovery of two false compartments where the fentanyl was found. Gonsen-Miranda was taken to the Rankin County Jail, and no bond has been set for him at this time.
