Emily Terrell named Newton County’s 2025 Distinguished Young Woman
SUMMARY: Emily Terrell received awards in overall fitness, scholastic, and an essay award at the Distinguished Young Woman of Newton County competition. In addition to other preliminary awards, she also received the Vicki Castillo Empowerment Award. Emily is excited to meet new people and is preparing for the state competition to improve upon her talent and self-expression. Reflecting on her experience, she encourages others to start their research early and not wait until the last minute. She enjoyed the supportive environment of the competition and credits it with her growth and success.
She received awards in overall fitness, overall scholastic and won the Be Your Best Self Essay Award and Vicki Castillo Empowerment Award.

Northwest Rankin has a new boys basketball head coach
SUMMARY: Northwest Rankin High School has hired former Provine head coach, Sir Dante Washington, to lead their boys basketball program. Hub City announces $2.2 M grant for next phase of Gordon's creek project
SUMMARY: Gordon's Creek in Hattisburg is set to undergo significant improvements to boost ecotourism with a grant of over $2 million from the Mississippi outdoor stewardship trust fund. The project will include an 8ft pathway and pedestrian bridge connecting the Gordon's Creek linear trail with other nearby parks, an outdoor classroom, and picturesque views of the Leaf River. The goal is to change the perception of Gordon's Creek and the Leaf River from merely bodies of water to valuable assets that attract more visitors. Hattisburg's project received the most funding in this round of grants, with the hope for construction to begin next year.
Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker announced a significant grant from the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund (MOSTF).
