Mississippi will allow quicker Medicaid coverage during pregnancy to try to help women and babies

SUMMARY: Mississippi has passed a new allowing earlier coverage for pregnant women to address the 's high rate of infant mortality. The legislation, signed by Gov. Tate Reeves, will outpatient medical care for up to 60 days while Medicaid applications are being processed. Advocates hope this will improve outcomes for women and babies. Mississippi has one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the U.S., with Black infants disproportionately affected. The new law has bipartisan and is seen as a positive step towards better health for families in the state, despite Mississippi not yet expanding Medicaid eligibility.
