Mississippi will allow quicker Medicaid coverage during pregnancy to try to help women and babies
SUMMARY: Mississippi has passed a new law allowing earlier Medicaid coverage for pregnant women to address the state's high rate of infant mortality. The legislation, signed by Gov. Tate Reeves, will provide outpatient medical care for up to 60 days while Medicaid applications are being processed. Advocates hope this will improve health outcomes for women and babies. Mississippi has one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the U.S., with Black infants disproportionately affected. The new law has bipartisan support and is seen as a positive step towards better health for families in the state, despite Mississippi not yet expanding Medicaid eligibility.
