Monroe County students show off skills at spelling bee
SUMMARY: Students in Monroe County, Mississippi participated in the annual spelling bee, and a 5th grader named Willow Thompson won first place by correctly spelling “altimeter”. The students received a study guide beforehand and were encouraged to look through the Merriam-Webster Dictionary to prepare. The spelling bee was seen as beneficial for increasing spelling, reading, and writing skills. Additionally, it was noted that participating built confidence and prepared students for public speaking. The top three spellers will advance to the online semi-finals, and the semi-finals winners will move on to the state spelling bee in March.

SUMMARY: JXN Water announced a temporary road closure on Paden Street in Jackson, Mississippi due to a large sinkhole.
