Helping lower food insecurity for college students
SUMMARY: Mississippi University for Women has been operating the Owl Food Pantry since 2021 to help the 25% of Mississippians facing food insecurity, especially those on college campuses. The pantry is open to currently enrolled students, accepting donations from the campus and surrounding community. This initiative was led by leaders at the university in response to the high rates of food insecurity. The pantry is open on weekdays from 8am to 5pm and is an important resource for current students in need. Donations, both in-kind and monetary, can be made through the MUW foundation office.

Court upholds conviction of Mississippi woman sentenced after victim dies in coma
SUMMARY: Brittany Carter's conviction for second-degree murder in connection to the death of Chornell Mayfield was upheld by the Mississippi Court of Appeals. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, and an additional five-year term for possession of a stolen firearm. Carter had argued self-defense during her appeal, but the court found the evidence sufficient to support the conviction. Mayfield was left comatose for two years after Carter intentionally struck her with a vehicle in 2017, eventually leading to her death. The court affirmed Carter's conviction and sentence, finding no errors in the trial court.

School bus crash leaves minor injuries

Man wanted for January 2024 homicide in Jackson
