Mississippi Supreme Court hears arguments over House Bill 1020
SUMMARY: Oral arguments were heard in the Mississippi Supreme Court regarding the provisions of House Bill 1020, which allows for the appointment of judges instead of their election. Jackson residents appealed a Chancery Court ruling that found the law does not violate the state constitution. The residents argue that the appointment of judges by the legislature would transfer power from the people to the lawmakers. The law also expands the territory of the state-run Capitol Police department and aims to address the high crime rate in Jackson. Critics claim that the law undermines local autonomy and creates unequal policing.
