Columbus man honored for his service during World War II
SUMMARY: Corporal Willie James Humphries, a 98-year-old veteran from Columbus, Mississippi, was honored by the National Montford Point Marine Association for his service during World War II. He served in the Marine Corps and was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his service. The association aims to commemorate African-American marines who served at Montford Point Camp and find and honor more of these men. Lieutenant Colonel Janice Mitchell stressed the importance of paying tribute to these marines and acknowledging the sacrifices they made.
