Father of JSU student mourns son’s death
SUMMARY: The Jackson community is mourning the loss of a Jackson State University student who was shot and killed during a fight on campus. Jaylen Burns, known for his willingness to help others and his leadership qualities, was trying to break up the fight when he was fatally shot. Originally from Chicago, Burns chose to attend Jackson State because he fell in love with the culture and atmosphere. The university is still investigating the incident and is asking anyone with information to come forward. A balloon release will be held in Jaylen's honor on campus.

Three teens denied bond in shooting death of USM football player
SUMMARY: Three teenagers, Orlando May, Allen Gardner, and Samir Green, have been charged with capital murder and attempted armed carjacking in connection with the death of Marcus “MJ” Daniels, Jr., a Southern Miss football player. The suspects, aged 16 to 18, were denied bond on the murder charges but received a $100,000 bond for the carjacking charges. Daniels, who previously played for the Ole Miss football team, was found deceased inside a vehicle at Ivy Row Apartments on June 11. Visitation and funeral services are scheduled for June 22 at George County High School Gymnasium. Authorities are soliciting additional information via Hattiesburg police or Crime Stoppers.

Jackson police search for man who disappeared two years ago
SUMMARY: The family of Donald Hewitt, Jr., missing since June 14, 2022, is seeking help to locate him. His last known location was Park at Moss Creek Apartments, and he was last seen wearing a blue and white polo shirt with khaki pants and brown shoes on Ridgewood Road. Despite past frustrations with the Jackson Police Department, a new detective, Detective Archie, has made significant progress. Man shot by Alcorn County sheriff’s deputy dies at hospital
SUMMARY: Jason Sekerak, 39, died at Region One in Memphis after being shot by an Alcorn County sheriff's deputy. The incident occurred when Sekerak was reportedly severely beating his mother, who called the police. Despite the deputy's verbal commands and use of a Taser, Sekerak continued to assault his mother, leading the deputy to shoot him in the back of the neck.
