2023 Mississippi legislative session bill-by-bill recap
Although the 2023 Mississippi legislative session was predicted by some to be uneventful given it's an election year, lawmakers decided to go against the grain and pass a plethora of bills prior to Saturday's sine die.Â
Below is a recap of key legislation that either made it through this year or didn't. Most bills passed will go into effect on July 1.Â

Largest Budget in State History
Mississippi lawmakers passed a state budget of $7.6 billion — the largest in state history. Over $600 million of those funds will go toward road and infrastructure funding. Roughly $120 million will be spent on education and nearly $104 million will go to struggling state hospitals.
Hospital Aid
As the reality of closure continues to set in for some hospitals across the state, the Republican-led legislature decided to go against full-on Medicaid expansion and instead pass a handful of bills they believe will serve as both short-term and long-term…

Two people airlifted after separate ATV accidents in Lowndes Co.
SUMMARY: Two ATV accidents in Lowndes County, Mississippi resulted in two people being airlifted for care. The first crash occurred on Wright Road in Caledonia, where a mother and three children were ejected from a Can-Am side-by-side. Two children were treated and released, the mother was taken to Baptist Golden Triangle, and a six-year-old was airlifted to Jackson. The second crash happened near Canfield Road, where a 24-year-old was thrown from a side-by-side and flown to Jackson for treatment. A passenger in this accident was not injured. MBI investigates inmate found dead at Lowndes County jail
SUMMARY: An inmate in the Lowndes County jail, 52-year-old Eddie Thomas Jr., was found dead in his cell after being in jail for 56 days. Sheriff Eddie Hawkins stated that his staff attempted life-saving measures but Thomas was alone in his cell all night. The death appears to be natural with no signs of trauma, but an autopsy is required. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the death investigation. Tree falls through home of South Jackson family
SUMMARY: A family in South Jackson had their home damaged after a large tree collapsed through their roof on Cedar Pine Drive. Fortunately, the daughter survived the incident, with the tree and debris landing just inches away from where they were sleeping. The incident woke them up, prompting them to run before the tree fell through the roof, narrowly missing them. The tree had fallen from a neighbor's backyard, and the family is now trying to figure out their next steps.
