Laurel wants to annex Calhoun community
SUMMARY: The city of Laurel's proposal to annex the Calhoun Community in Jones County is facing criticism from local business owners. Mayor Johnny McGee argues that expanding into the Calhoun area would economically benefit Laurel and increase services like fire protection, sanitary sewer services, garbage pickup, and street maintenance, despite higher property taxes. Business owner Scott Carmichael opposes the plan, stating that the area already has these services and accusing the city of seeking tax revenue. Carmichael also highlights the high cost of proposed sewer system extensions. The annexation process could take years, requiring court and judge approval.
