Potato Salad Serves as Summer’s Essential Side Dish
SUMMARY: Potato salad, a key summer side dish, holds special memories for the author, particularly the version made by Minnie Ellen Maples using homemade sweet pickles from locally grown cucumbers. Despite attempts to recreate it, the author never matched her mother-in-law's recipe and later adapted the method by pre-dicing potatoes and using store-bought pickles, spicy mustard, and chicken broth. Julia Child's potato salad recipe adds elegance with ingredients like Yukon Gold potatoes, champagne vinegar, and fresh herbs. Both recipes celebrate tradition and culinary innovation, making potato salad a beloved dish for family gatherings. Enjoy Minnie Ellen Maples' and Julia Child's distinct recipes.

Crawfish, Mudbugs, or Crawdads? A History of the Crawfish Boil
SUMMARY: Crawfish, commonly known as mudbugs or crawdads, are a celebrated summertime delicacy in Mississippi. Traditionally boiled with spicy seasonings, potatoes, corn, sausage, vegetables, and served on newspaper-covered tables, they evoke the essence of Cajun culture. Historically, Native Americans first consumed crawfish using baited reeds, with Acadians refining recipes in the 1700s. Des Ecrevisses Bouillies, an early adaptation, showcased French influences made specific to crawfish. As Creole chefs in New Orleans popularized crawfish boils, the tradition became ingrained in Mississippi cuisine. Today, crawfish boils are festive social gatherings, highlighting the region's rich culinary heritage.
