Supreme Court partially sides with legislature in House Bill 1020 lawsuit
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled that a special court created by House Bill 1020 for the Capitol Complex Improvement District (CCID) is constitutional, and that the chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court has the power to appoint judges in emergency situations. However, the court also ruled that the appointment of temporary circuit court judges to the Hinds County Chancery Court violates the Mississippi Constitution. The lawsuit was filed by Jackson residents arguing that judges must be elected by residents of the area they represent. The provision appointing temporary circuit court judges has been remanded back to the chancery clerk.

Attorney for Rankin County teen murder suspect asks court to bar media from trial
SUMMARY: A lawyer for Carly Madison Gregg, 14, charged with killing her mother and attempting to murder her stepfather in Rankin County, is seeking to ban media from the trial, fearing unfair prejudice and requesting a bond reduction from $1 million. Judge David Morrow delayed ruling on these requests, noting the public's right to know and freedom of the press. The incident involved the teenager allegedly shooting her mother, a teacher, and injuring her stepfather, with claims of premeditation but also suggestions of mental health issues influencing her actions. The judge expects a prompt mental evaluation of Gregg.
