Rip tides can turn fun beach vacations to nightmares

SUMMARY: In less than two weeks, rip currents have claimed the lives of at least 11 people in popular vacation spots along the Gulf Coast, from Fort Morgan to Panama City Beach. Rip currents are responsible for more deaths than tornadoes or hurricanes, and even experienced swimmers are not immune. Emergency workers have responded to numerous distress calls, and it is important for beachgoers to pay attention to beach flags indicating water conditions. Drowning is a silent event, and it is crucial to have someone watching over those in the water, especially children. Swimmers caught in a rip current should try to swim parallel to the shoreline to escape its pull.

Teen charged in death of 14-year-old in Jackson appears in court

SUMMARY: A teenager, John Foote, has been charged with murder for the shooting death of 14-year-old Cameron Horne-Crook in Jackson, Mississippi. During a preliminary hearing, Foote was denied bond. Two other teenagers, Maxle Mooneyham and Siyaski Crawford, were also arrested in connection to the shooting. Mooneyham was charged with tampering with evidence and Crawford with accessory to murder. Crawford admitted to moving the victim's body after the shooting. Additionally, Cameron Horne-Crook's brother, Bryson Horne, was also killed in a separate shooting incident in the area.

Woman sentenced for embezzling from Brandon High band booster funds

SUMMARY: Donna Gladney Floyd from Rankin County, Mississippi, was sentenced to 20 years in the custody of the MDOC after pleading guilty to embezzling $45,000 from the Brandon High School band booster funds. She will serve five years in prison followed by five years of probation, and has been ordered to pay court costs, restitution, and investigative fees. Floyd was scheduled to go to trial in 2024 but pled guilty in April 2024. Her arrest in 2023 followed an investigation prompted by the Rankin County School District and Brandon High School officials.
