Recent rain decreases risk of wildfires in Mississippi
SUMMARY: In Mississippi, Governor Tate Reeves lifted the partial statewide burn ban on November 16, 2023, due to recent rainfall reducing wildfire risks. The ban had been in effect responding to severe drought conditions. Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) reported that from August to mid-November, they responded to 1,506 wildfires that burned 21,919 acres and threatened over 2,679 structures. Officials continue to urge caution during outdoor burning, emphasizing the need for vigilance to prevent wildfires. Despite the statewide ban lift, 27 counties still maintain local burn bans under the direction of their respective Board of Supervisors.
