NAACP demands Rankin County sheriff resign
SUMMARY: Rankin County residents in Mississippi are calling for the resignation of Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey after six white law enforcement officers pleaded guilty to torturing two Black men in a racist assault in January 2023. The Rankin County NAACP President, Angela English, claims that the Sheriff's Office has inadequate training, unlawful searches, and discriminating policies. English plans to submit a petition to Governor Tate Reeves to take action. Some residents believe that Governor Reeves should step in and make changes to address police brutality. To remove Bailey from office, another candidate would need to be elected, but Bailey is currently running unopposed.
