MUW unveils historical marker honoring The Fabulous Six

SUMMARY: In 1966, six young black women applied to enroll at the all-white Mississippi College for Women. Despite facing resistance and harsh words, they persevered and became the first black to attend the . Laverne Green-Leech, one of the students, recalls her overwhelming first day on campus. Now, 57 years later, the university is honoring these women by placing a marker in their honor in Pioneers Plaza. The marker resulted from a collaboration between the university and the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. Additionally, an exhibition called “In Their Footsteps” is being displayed at MUW to tell the story of the first black students at the university.
