Mississippi Senate agrees to a new school funding formula, sending plan to the governor

SUMMARY: Former West Point police officer Donovan Jeffers and his wife Quiyona Pederson have been charged with murder in connection to the death of their four-month-old child. The couple brought the infant to the hospital with head and neck injuries in November 2022, and the State Medical Examiner's Office determined the injuries were a result of abuse. Arrest warrants were issued, but the couple fled the state and were arrested in West Virginia in April 2024. They have since been booked into the Clay County Detention Center and each received a $300,000 bond.

After a SNAP fraud investigation, she was served an arrest warrant in April 2024. The case was referred to the Copiah County District Attorney's office and an indictment was secured in March 2024. Johnson is accused of stealing a total of $70,000 in SNAP benefits.

SUMMARY: Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba declared a State of Emergency after a severe storm caused damage in the area. The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds, leading to power outages and a boil-water alert for surface water customers. The O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant lost power, resulting in low water pressure. The State of Emergency will be reviewed every seven days until the situation improves. The mayor ordered all city agencies and departments to provide assistance and follow emergency protocols. Power at the water treatment plant was restored at 7:00 a.m. after the storm.
