Mississippi Department of Transportation wants new funding formula
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Transportation is considering a new funding model to supplement the $6 billion already invested by taxpayers in the state's roads and bridges. The agency is exploring creative ways to increase revenue without raising taxes, such as revamping the lottery money distribution and utilizing gaming revenue and use tax revenue. MDOT executive director Brad White emphasizes the need for additional funding, especially after closing down a maintenance system to focus on critical repairs. The agency traditionally relies on fuel tax revenue, but White believes it is time to diversify funding sources to stay ahead in transportation infrastructure.
