MHP responds to four fatal crashes during 2023 Independence Day Travel Period

SUMMARY: During the 2023 Independence Day Holiday Travel Period in Mississippi, there were four fatal crashes. Troopers responded to a total of 76 crashes, resulting in 30 injuries. The fatal crashes occurred in Chickasaw, Panola, Marion, and Itawamba counties. The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued 4,458 citations, made 49 arrests for impaired driving, and cited 508 drivers for occupant restraint violations. In comparison to the previous year, there were fewer crashes, DUIs, and fatalities reported during the same holiday period.

Courtney Stewart Wiggly was arrested for shooting her husband, Daryl Wiggly, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was flown to Jackson for treatment. Courtney is in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center awaiting her Initial Appearance. The incident is being investigated as aggravated domestic violence.
