SUMMARY: The city of Meridian is facing serious issues with its freshwater and wastewater systems. The Meridian City Council decided to table the approval of a contract with Waggoner Engineering, which was meant to train and recruit employees for the city's water department. Mayor Jimmie Smith expressed frustration with the delay and emphasized the importance of proactive maintenance to prevent system failures. Scott Phillips from Waggoner Engineering recommended additional staff training and proper operation and maintenance to improve the city's water distribution system, which currently only has 54 employees to operate and maintain over 473 miles of infrastructure. The mayor agreed that bringing on new certified operators is crucial for the city's water department.
