Hattiesburg artist Thomas Jackson painted the mural with help from Forrest General Hospital's Project “SEARCH” students. Free weekend at Two Mississippi Museums to commemorate Freedom Summer
SUMMARY: This week marks the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer, where an organization is educating and empowering new leaders. In 1964, black and white Americans united to register black voters in Mississippi, challenging voter discrimination. Volunteers faced violent resistance, and activists James Cheney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were killed. The event underscores the importance of understanding history, as systemic barriers still affect black communities. Higher Purpose sponsors provide free entry to two Mississippi museums to engage the public and emphasize that even the young can advocate for change. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 followed the violence of Freedom Summer.
