SUMMARY: The City of Jackson awarded Richard's Disposal a $60 million contract for garbage collection, which was approved by a 4-3 vote by the City Council. The amended contract eliminates garbage carts to save money, with Councilman Ashby Foote estimating $4.3 million in savings. However, Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba explained that some costs such as rear loaders attached to the carts are sunk costs that cannot be recovered. Richard's Disposal is currently operating under an emergency contract with the city, and the new 6 year contract will go into effect on April 1, 2024.
