In federal lawsuit, owner of medical marijuana dispensary says Mississippi censors business owners
SUMMARY: Clarence Cocroft II, owner of Tru Source Medical Cannabis in Mississippi, has filed a federal lawsuit alleging state regulations violate his First Amendment rights by preventing medical marijuana businesses from advertising. Mississippi legalized medical marijuana in 2022, but its Department of Health bans such businesses from media advertising. Cocroft asserts that if it's legal to sell a product, it should be legal to advertise it. His attorneys from the Institute for Justice argue that the state's restrictions on truthful commercial speech regarding legal products are unconstitutional. Cocroft has resorted to leasing his billboards and relying on word-of-mouth due to these regulations.

SUMMARY: One person was injured in an officer-involved shooting in Monroe County, Mississippi, on April 29. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation responded to the incident where Monroe County deputies encountered a suspect with a knife during a disturbance call. The deputies fired shots, injuring the suspect who was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect was wanted for a 2023 double homicide in Natchez. The deputies did not sustain any serious physical injuries. MBI agents will investigate the incident further and report their findings to the Attorney General's Office.
