High Court hears arguments in Godbolt appeal
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court is reviewing the appeal of Willie Cory Godbolt, convicted for the 2017 murders of eight people in Lincoln County. In 2020, Godbolt was found guilty on all counts, receiving life sentences for the murders and death sentences for the capital murders. Public defenders argue the convictions should be overturned, citing the use of prior bad act evidence that they claim unfairly influenced the jury. They believe separate trials were necessary and that the jury was unfairly selected. However, state prosecutors maintain that evidence of Godbolt's past violence against his wife establishes motive. A decision is expected by May 2024.
