Hidden History: Mississippi’s Nazi Prisoners of War
SUMMARY: In rural Pearl River County, Mississippi, lies the forgotten remains of a World War II prisoner of war camp, Hillcrest Farm. It housed hundreds of captured German and Italian soldiers during the war. A local explorer's discovery of a war medal initiated an investigation into the state's wartime history, revealing that Mississippi was home to primary POW camps like Camp Shelby. These POWs were integral to the state's economy, taking over farm work and other labor-intensive jobs as local workers had enlisted in the war effort. Some prisoners even returned to Mississippi after the war, becoming American citizens and starting new lives. The war medal was likely left behind by one of these prisoners.
A discovered Nazi war medal, a Pearl River County prisoner of war camp, and a hidden history not many Mississippians know.
