Gov. Reeves names March 21 as Down Syndrome Awareness Day in Mississippi

Governor Tate Reeves has issued a proclamation naming Tuesday, March 21, 2023, as Down Syndrome Awareness Day across Mississippi, aligning with World Down Syndrome Day.

Each year, across the promote the awareness of the over 400,000 people in the U.S. that are diagnosed with Down Syndrome on March 21, sharing information and aid to those interested in learning more.

In his proclamation, Reeves names the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) and the Little Light House of Central Mississippi as two nonprofits that have massive outreach programs throughout the Magnolia State.

Reeves states that NDSS “envisions a world in which all people with Down Syndrome have the to enhance their quality of , realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities.”

Award-winning Petal teacher charged with sex crimes

SUMMARY: A Petal teacher who received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award in 2022 has been charged with sex crimes involving several minor . 34-year-old Tyler Shows was engaged in questionable activities with at least a dozen students at Petal Upper Elementary School. Petal served Shows with three warrants for his arrest, distribution of sexual materials to a minor and touching a child for lustful purposes. Shows turned himself in and waived his right to a hearing, and will be booked into the Forrest County Jail. This arrest after Petal School District discovered instances of criminal conduct during an internal investigation.
