JCSD reaches settlement agreement with former deputy
SUMMARY: Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin and management employees have agreed to undergo training on federal anti-discrimination laws, specifically focusing on sexual harassment. This requirement stems from a complaint filed by former deputy Regina Newton, who alleged discrimination and violation of her civil rights. As part of the negotiated settlement agreement, Newton will receive a $5,000 payment. The complaint details instances of harassment, including inappropriate behavior and explicit content shared in a work-related group chat. Newton resigned due to the hostile work environment and filed the charge with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The agreement does not admit any violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
