Hurricane season officially begins today
SUMMARY: Emergency responders urge everyone to prepare for an above-average hurricane season, with weather experts predicting over 20 storms. Malary White from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency stresses the importance of preparation, even for those away from the Gulf Coast. She highlights that hurricanes can have significant residual impacts such as flooding and power outages, citing Hurricane Ida's far-reaching effects. White advises people to create a plan and assemble a “go-kit” with essentials like food, water, medical supplies, batteries, and flashlights for at least three days. Hurricane Special 2024: Prepare Mississippi Pt. 2
SUMMARY: To prepare for hurricanes, assemble supplies including a 3-day food and water supply, chargers, fuel, and cash. Historic hurricanes like Camille, Frederick, Elena, Georges, Katrina, Isaac, Ida, and Zeta have devastated Mississippi. Each storm has emphasized the importance of preparedness and proactive measures. Post-Katrina, Mississippi Power built a multi-million dollar storm center to improve disaster response. Tree maintenance is crucial, as dead or weak trees can pose severe risks. Know your evacuation zones, have a plan, and follow local guidance. Inland flooding is also significant, so knowing your home's flood risk is essential for comprehensive preparation.
