SUMMARY: On Day, many restaurant chains offer and discounted meals to veterans and active duty military members. Applebee's is offering a free dine-in meal and $5 “Bounce Back” card for a future meal, while Bob Evans is giving veterans and active duty military a free meal from a menu of seven offerings. Other chains such as Buffalo Wild Wings, California Pizza Kitchen, Denny's, Dunkin', Hooters, IHOP, Krispy Kreme, Mission BBQ, Red Robin, Sheetz, Starbucks, and White Castle are also offering free meals or discounts with proof of military service. Check with individual locations for participation, and additional deals can be found on Military.com and The American Legion.

Mississippi woman accused of stealing $31K in SNAP benefits

SUMMARY: Ashley Johnson from Copiah County, Mississippi has been charged with fraudulently receiving $31,259 in SNAP by not accurately her household income and composition to the Mississippi Department of Human Services. After a SNAP fraud investigation, she was served an arrest warrant in April 2024. The case was referred to the Copiah County District Attorney's office and an indictment was secured in March 2024. Johnson is accused of stealing a total of $70,000 in SNAP benefits.

Jackson mayor declares State of Emergency due to storm damage

SUMMARY: Chokwe A. Lumumba declared a of Emergency after a severe storm caused in the area. The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds, leading to power outages and a boil- alert for surface water customers. The O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant lost power, resulting in low water pressure. The State of Emergency will be reviewed every seven days until the situation improves. The mayor ordered all agencies and departments to assistance and follow emergency protocols. Power at the water treatment plant was restored at 7:00 a.m. after the storm.
