Former Jones County reserve deputy sentenced to 20 years for fatal shooting
SUMMARY: Former Jones County Deputy George R Ryan Walters was sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to second degree murder for shooting and killing a man in a church parking lot in Laurel. Walters will serve 10 years in prison and 10 years on probation. The victim's daughter shared an impact statement expressing her hurt and anger towards Walters. Walters was originally charged with first-degree murder, but accepted a plea deal to the lesser charge. In addition to his sentence, Walters will have to pay court costs and fines. The incident occurred in April of 2023 at the Rock Pentecostal Church.

MSU president shares details on campus construction

2nd annual Juneteenth festival celebrates freedom in Calhoun City
SUMMARY: Calhoun City celebrated Black culture, food, and business as part of its Juneteenth events, featuring a BBQ cookoff and family fun activities. This is the city's second time hosting the celebration. The Juneteenth Committee Vice President emphasized the importance of community unity and celebrating freedom from various forms of bondage, both spiritual and natural. The event saw a larger turnout compared to the previous year, with hopes for even greater participation in the future. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were freed, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and was made a federal holiday in 2021.
The second annual Juneteenth Festival was held in Calhoun City, celebrating freedom and Black culture.
