First African American William Carey student reflects on integration
SUMMARY: In 1965, black high school graduates in Hattiesburg had to leave town to pursue higher education due to segregation. Vermester Jackson Bester and Linda Cross Williams were the first to receive scholarships to attend college in Carbondale, Illinois. Bester and Williams faced challenges as they integrated William Carey College, but their community supported them. Years later, Bester started a scholarship at William Carey to support other students. In 2023, another scholarship was founded in Bester's name to help Hattiesburg high school students with full tuition. These efforts have empowered generations of students from the area.
