Editorial: Confederate Memorial Day
SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi has declared April Confederate History Month, urging Americans to understand and appreciate their heritage. The proclamation, signed annually by Reeves and previous governors, is supported by groups like the Sons of Confederate Veterans. However, there are concerns about whether promoting Confederate principles, including slavery, is appropriate for a changing Mississippi. While Confederate symbols have been removed, honoring those who fought against the country is questioned. Advocates for honoring Mississippians who fought for justice, like Medgar Evers and Fannie Lou Hamer, are calling for a reevaluation of the state's commemoration practices to align with evolving values.
