Government shutdown impacts on Mississippi

SUMMARY: A shutdown in the United States could have immediate impacts on Head Start programs, which would be devastating for the 23,000 families in Mississippi who rely on these programs. While Mississippi should be okay in the short term because their are not on an October first cycle, federal workers, military personnel, could be furloughed or have to work without pay. National parks would close, small businesses and farm loans would no longer be processed, and governments would have to pay for federal services. A long-term shutdown could result in 390,000 losing access to SNAP .

Medical center honors its volunteers Thursday

SUMMARY: South Central Regional Medical Center recently held its annual volunteer ceremony and appreciation reception, where they honored 43 volunteers who collectively contributed over 7,000 hours of service. These volunteers traditionally assisted in like the emergency department, 's Academy offices, and nursing homes. Awards were given for Caring Teen Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. The hospital acknowledged that they hadn't been able to honor their volunteers since 2019, and expressed gratitude for their dedication. They also encouraged others to get involved by visiting their website for more information on volunteering opportunities at the hospital.

Fatal tractor-trailer accident claims life, ties up traffic
