DOJ assists JPD, coroner’s office with next-of-kin death notifications
SUMMARY: The Justice Department announced they will provide technical assistance to the Jackson Police Department and the Hinds County Coroner's Office regarding policies and procedures for next-of-kin death notifications. Lack of timely notifications led to deceased individuals receiving pauper's burials in unmarked graves. Some reports suggest race or other factors may have influenced the notification process. The goal is to ensure transparency and compliance with civil rights laws. Technical assistance will be provided to improve death notification systems and policies, with a focus on training and implementation. This assistance does not imply fault, as both agencies voluntarily agreed to receive support from the department.
