Columbus mayor wants federal funds to help alleviate deep flooding problems
SUMMARY: Columbus, Mississippi has been facing flooding issues for over 50 years due to the aging and insufficient drainage infrastructure. The floods are impacting many low-lying areas and leading to water seeping into people's homes. Mayor Keith Gaskin is advocating for using city and federal government budgets to address the issue. One anonymous resident described trying to walk through ankle-high water to get to a school bus. The city and state are allocating American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to address flooding, and Mississippi University for Women is also planning to use their ARPA funds to address this issue. Mayor Gaskin is emphasizing the need to work together to address infrastructure funding and improve the quality of life for residents.
