Bill signed into law expanding outpatient services for pregnant women
SUMMARY: Mississippi has enacted new legislation aimed at reducing the state's high infant and maternal mortality rates. The law, HB 539, grants eligible women access to outpatient prenatal services under Medicaid for up to 60 days, expanding support for mothers with a family income below 194% of the federal poverty level. The law, supported by a bipartisan majority, simplifies the process for applying for care and goes into effect on July 1. This effort complements ongoing initiatives to broaden Medicaid coverage and improve healthcare responsiveness in Mississippi. While the national infant mortality rate is 5.6 deaths per 1,000 live births, Mississippi's rate is significantly higher at 8.1, with a maternal mortality rate also exceeding the national average.
