Lawmakers nearing compromise on Medicaid expansion plan amid gridlock
SUMMARY: Mississippi Senate conferees, after initially missing a meeting, are now open to negotiating Medicaid expansion with the House. The Senate's original proposal covers individuals up to 100% of the federal poverty level with a work requirement, while the House's plan aims for 138%, potentially benefiting 200,000 residents. The Senate's compromise includes managed care up to 100% and federal exchange coverage between 100% and 138% of the poverty level. The federal government would cover 90% of expenses and the state 10%. Both plans necessitate a work requirement, with the Senate ready to legalize such measures. Governor Tate Reeves, a Medicaid expansion opponent, facilitated Medicaid reimbursements for hospitals, as Mississippi remains among the 10 states without expanded Medicaid coverage. Any passed proposal would likely have to be resistant to a gubernatorial veto.

Reeves celebrates Medicaid expansion dying as Hosemann questions governor’s numbers
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers did not agree on a Medicaid expansion plan during their session. Governor Tate Reeves, who opposes such expansions, celebrated the halt as a victory on social media, deeming it an “Obamacare Medicaid Expansion scheme.” The Senate's only vote on the issue showed more favor than opposition among Republicans but was not enough to override a veto. Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann pointed out that the House and Senate supported expansion but clashed over work requirements. Hosemann believes CMS may accept a work requirement in the future. Current costs would be largely federally covered, with Mississippi benefiting financially. Mississippi remains one of the few states without Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, and rural hospitals are advocating for it to alleviate costs from uninsured patients.
