Senate to gut Medicaid expansion plan passed in the House and implement own language
SUMMARY: Mississippi faces a healthcare crisis, with legislation to expand Medicaid still under consideration. Senate Medicaid Committee chairman Kevin Blackwell plans to reject the Senate's Medicaid expansion bill and revise the House's proposal, aiming to include a work requirement and cover 200,000 employed individuals who can't afford private insurance. The House-passed Healthy Mississippi Works Act seeks to reach uninsured, low-income workers. The Senate will replace the House bill with its version, despite the governor's opposition to expanding Medicaid, which could necessitate a veto-proof majority. Mississippi ranks poorly in health outcomes like life expectancy and maternal and infant mortality rates.
