Senate Bill 2715 dies on calendar in Mississippi Senate
SUMMARY: A bill in the Mississippi state legislature proposing the merger of Mississippi University for Women with Mississippi State University and moving the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science to MSU campus is now dead. Senate Bill 2715 was allowed to die on the calendar, defeated by one vote when put before the Senate. A motion to reconsider was filed, giving the Senate until Monday to hear the bill again. MUW President Nora Miller thanked supporters and emphasized the school's growth in enrollment and excellence in Liberal Arts and Professional education for both women and men.

3rd-grade state reading assessment passing numbers hold steady
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education reported that 75.7% of third graders passed the state reading assessment on the first try, a slight decrease from the previous year's 76.3% pass rate. In the Monroe County School District, 92.4% of third graders passed on the first attempt, the second highest percentage in the state, while the Baldwyn School District had the lowest pass rate at 45.8%. Jackson man sentenced for killing 3 family members, including pregnant sister
SUMMARY: Maurice Forte, a 29-year-old man from Jackson, Mississippi, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his grandmother, mother, and pregnant sister in 2018. Forte was convicted on four counts of capital murder after fatally shooting the three women multiple times in their home. The victims were Forte's grandmother, mother, and sister who was seven-months pregnant. Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens stated that Forte showed “senseless violence” by shooting his grandmother eighteen times, his mother nine times, and his pregnant sister twice. Forte will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole for his actions.
