SUMMARY: In Jasper County, authorities have identified skeletal remains found under a mobile home in December 2022 as those of Patrick Prater. Prater had been reported missing by his girlfriend, Tammy Hill, on December 15, 2022. Investigators believe Prater was fatally electrocuted underneath his Vosburg residence shortly after his disappearance. The condition of the body made immediate identification impossible when it was discovered on December 26. The home was later vacated when Hill moved out. Prater's remains have been sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab to determine the official cause of death.

With hurricane season on the horizon, Mississippi lawmakers fund mitigation program
SUMMARY: The Comprehensive Hurricane Damage Mitigation Program, initiated by the Mississippi Insurance Department in 2007, has received funding for the first time with a $5 million allocation from lawmakers, signed by Gov. Tate Reeves on May 13. The funds, not from the general fund but public funds, limit grants to $10,000 per recipient. Intended for the state's most hurricane-vulnerable lower six counties, the program supports mitigation efforts like adding hurricane shutters and purchasing flood insurance. Although an extension statewide was blocked by politics, Commissioner Mike Chaney highlighted that the grant application details will be released soon, ahead of the potentially active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season starting June 1.
