A federal judge allows Mississippi officials to move forward with creating a state-run court
SUMMARY: A federal judge has ruled in favor of Mississippi officials creating a state-run court in Jackson, despite objections from the NAACP. The new court, called the capital complex Improvement District Court, will have a judge appointed by the state supreme court Chief Justice and prosecutors appointed by the state attorney general. This court will have jurisdiction in parts of Jackson that include state government buildings and some residential and shopping areas. Supporters, including Governor Reeves and legislators, argue that it is part of an effort to control crime in Jackson. The NAACP and civil rights attorneys argue that the new court undermines democracy because it bypasses local voters and elected officials in choosing its judge and prosecutors.
